Dillon’s Lady Wildcats earned an 8-5 win over the Waccamaw Warriors on Friday, April 17 in Dillon.

Waccamaw took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as the catcher missed the ball on the third strike, scoring the runner at third and allowing the batter to reach first. Dillon’s Shar’Asia Samuel tripled in the bottom of the inning, and Tori Grimsley made a sacrifice bunt to score her to even the score at 1-1.

Waccamaw scored again in the top of the third, but the Wildcats evened up the score again in the bottom of the fourth as Brittany Miller hit one to the center fence for a double to score the runner. Da’Kerhia Samuel followed with another double to score Miller for a 3-2 lead, and Ashley Phillips hit one to the right that bounced off the fielder’s glove to let Phillips reach third and score Samuel for a 4-2 lead, and the Wildcats brought one more runner in for a 5-2 lead at the end of four.

After an injury in the top of the fifth, the game resumed with the Wildcats holding off the Warriors. In the bottom of the inning, Erin Bailey reached on a grounder and advanced to third on a high pitch, and Miller hit a double to score her for a 6-2 lead. Da’Kerhia Samuel flew out, but allowed Miller to reach third and score on a grounder from Phillips for a 7-2 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Miller struck again, hitting one to the right and getting all the way to third to pick up an RBI for an 8-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Waccamaw managed to load the bases with two outs before drawing a walk to score the first runner and keep the bases loaded. A single brought in another runner, and a dropped third strike by the catcher let the runner reach first and pick up another runner to close the gap to 8-5, but the next batter lined one to the pitcher to end the game.

All five of Waccamaw’s runs were unearned.

The Lady Wildcats improved to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in Region 8-2A.

Tonight, Dillon will be on the road at Aynor at 6:30 p.m., and tomorrow the Lady Cats will be at Marion. On Thursday, Dillon will be at Waccamaw, and next week the Wildcats will wrap up the regular season with home games against Hartsville and Latta.
