Diamond Backs Win at Smithfield

The 10U Diamond Backs 05 won the 2015 North Carolina USSSA Wallace Ashley III Relay for Life tournament on Saturday, March 21, and Sunday, March 22, in Smithfield, NC.

The Diamond Backs played some of the best competition in North Carolina and defeated the Pitt County Dynamite of Greenville, NC, 3-2 in a shootout to win their second championship of the season.

In their first game on Saturday, the Diamond Backs took down Port City Thunder 11-2 with Logan Grice earning the win on the mound, pitching two innings for two hits, two runs, two earned runs, two walks, and two outs.

Summer Bullard led the Diamond Backs at bat, going 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, three RBI, one stolen base, and two runs scored. Taryn Weatherford went 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs; Logan Grice was 1-for-2 with one run; Raven Locklear went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run; Tabitha Williams scored one run; Ryleigh Schurlknight scored one run with one stolen base; Lindsey Floyd scored one run with one RBI; Averi Lovell scored one run with two RBI and one stolen base; Ashton Goodwin scored one run with one RBI; and Riley Calcutt picked up one RBI with one stolen base.

In game two, the Diamond Backs defeated Carolina Mash 14-1 with Tabitha Williams earning the win on the mound, pitching three innings for one hit, one run, three walks, and four outs.

Calcutt went 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base at bat; Bullard went 2-for-2 with two runs, one RBI, and one stolen base; Locklear went 1-for-1 with a double, two RBI, one stolen base, and two runs scored; Grice went 1-for-2 with one run; Williams was 1-for-1 with one RBI; Kaylee Holloway scored one run with two RBI; Weatherford and Schurlknight each added one run with one RBI; Goodwin scored one run with one RBI and one stolen base; Melanie Sheets scored one run with one RBI; and Floyd scored two runs with one RBI.

In the third game on Saturday, the Diamond Backs took down the Angels 4-1. Bullard got the win, pitching five innings for two hits, one run, one earned run, and one walk, striking out 11.

At bat, Goodwin went 1-for-2 for a double; Locklear and Floyd each went 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored; Bullard went 1-for-1 with one run, one RBI, and two stolen bases; Grice went 1-for-2 with one run; and Schurlknight picked up one RBI.

On Sunday, the Diamond Backs edged Pitt County Dynamite 9-8 with Bullard getting the win on the mound. She pitched five innings for five hits, eight runs, five earned runs, and one walk, striking out 12.

At bat, Goodwin went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored; Schurlknight went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI; Bullard went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base; Floyd went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run; Calcutt went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run; Grice went 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run; Locklear went 1-for-3 with one run; and Sheets scored one run with one RBI.

In their second game against Pitt County, the Diamond Backs fell 10-4. Bullard pitched four innings in the loss, giving up eight hits, eight runs, seven earned runs, and two walks, striking out seven. Williams pitched one inning for the Diamond Backs for one hit, two runs, two earned runs, one walk, and one out.

At bat, Weatherford went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs; Locklear went 2-for-3 with one run; Schurlknight went 2-for-2 with one run; Grice went 1-for-2 with two RBI; and Bullard picked up one runner on a walk.

In the shootout for the championship, Bullard got the win, giving up just one hit and one walk for two runs.

At bat, Weatherford went 1-for-1 with one RBI and one run scored; Bullard went 1-for-1 with one RBI; Sheets scored one run; and Locklear reached on an error for one run and one RBI.
