Latta Vikings Hold Off Bears for 8-1 Win

The Latta Vikings earned an 8-1 win over the Carvers Bay Bears on Wednesday night in varsity baseball action.

Latta scored in the first inning with Cledus Williams reaching on a walk and stealing second. A single from John Kever Love advanced Williams to third where he scored on an error. Latta picked up their second run in the third, with Colby Lee singling, advancing on a sacrifice bunt from Williams, and scoring on a double from Love.

The Vikings picked up two runners in the fourth, with Austin Miller and Daniel Khalil each reaching on a single. Miller advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball, and Khalil stole third and scored on an error.

Latta sealed the win with four runs in the sixth, with McLeod Carmichael and Khalil hitting singles. Carmichael stole home, and Khalil advanced on a grounder from Lee before stealing home. Cledus Williams reached on a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single from Jackson Williams, who stole second. A double from Love scored Jackson Williams to put the Vikings up 8-0.

Latta held off the Bears all the way to the top of the seventh, where Webster reached on a walk, advanced on a single from Goode, and scored on a single from Langston for Carvers Bay’s only run.

Lee picked up the win on the mound, pitching a complete game for two hits, one run, one earned run, and three walks, striking out 11. For Carvers Bay, D. Lasane pitched 5.1 innings with nine hits, eight runs, eight earned runs, and six walks, with seven outs, and CJ Webster pitched two-thirds of an inning.

At bat for the Vikings, Love went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI; Khalil went 2-for-3 with two runs; Jackson Williams went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run; Lee went 1-for-4 with one run; Carmichael went 1-for-2 with one run; Austin Miller went 1-for-3 with one run; and Cledus Williams scored two runs.

For Carvers Bay, Goode went 1-for-2; Langston went 1-for-3 with one RBI; and CJ Webster scored one run.

Latta improved to 5-2-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 8-A. The Vikings were scheduled to play in Cheraw’s spring break tournament this week, and will return to regular season action at Green Sea on Tuesday, April 7.
