Myrtie Carabo Ayers

Myrtie Carabo Ayers, 95, passed away February 6, 2015 at Bethea Baptist Retirement Community and Health Care Center, Darlington, SC. The daughter of the late John Henry and Helen Harper Carabo, Myrtie was born June 9, 1919 in the Brownsville area of Marlboro County.  She was a member of the first graduating class of Lower Marlboro High School, Class of 1937.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 P.M. Monday at Brownsville Baptist Church.  Visitation will be 2:00-3:00 P.M. prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be private.
 
She married her high school sweetheart, Laurin Douglas Ayers while a senior in high school.  They were the parents of six children.  In addition to her parents, she is pre-deceased by her husband and three children; Hayne, Joyce and Scott.  She is survived by a daughter, Jean Horton of Rock Hill, SC, Jack Ayers of Dillon, SC and Doug Ayers of Delano, TN, granddaughters Teresa Bradley (Tony) of Rock Hill, SC and Tina Graham (Bill) of Terrell, NC, grandsons Brian Ayers of Holly Springs, NC and Donnie Ayers of  Minot, ND, three great granddaughters, two great grandsons and three great-great grandsons.  Myrtie was the last surviving member of her family including her brothers, sisters and cousins.
 
In her early years, Myrtie was an active member of Brownsville Baptist Church, serving as Sunday School teacher for intermediate girls, Training Union leader, and Vacation Bible School principal.  She was also active in the Association of WMU, serving as president.
 
Myrtie was lunch room manager for the Blenheim schools for 10 1/2 years and also served as dietician for Camp Rawls Baptist Camp for girls for several summers.
 
After her husband’s death, she moved to Greenwood, SC and became a member of the cottage staff of Connie Maxwell Children’s Home.  After 18 years at Connie Maxwell, Myrtie retired in January, 1989 and returned to her beloved Marlboro County, settling in Clio, SC.  She went to Bethea Home in November, 1997.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, PO Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648 and Camp Pinehill, 2096 Baptist Road, Bennettsville.
