East Students Learn About Soil

Angela Baker with the Dillon Soil and Water Conservation District came and spoke to second grade classes at East Elementary about plants and the importance they have in our lives.
During the presentation, Ms. Baker had a variety of plants for the student and taught about the different nutrients that plants need and how they receive them.   Several students participated in an activity where they pretended to be a tree.   They had to have their “roots” planted firmly in the ground and they were then instructed to “pick up” their nutrients that were on the ground. This allowed the students to see how trees, when planted close together could not get the necessary nutrients because of other trees being too close.   Each student received “The Adventures of Sammy Soil” booklet.
