County Board Holds Meeting

The Dillon County Board of Education recently held their November meeting.
Dillon District Four Superintendent Ray Rogers spoke briefly about the lawsuit ruling by the Supreme Court regarding how the schools are funded. In 1993, the initial suit was filed. Judge Thomas Cooper heard the case in 2005. It went before the Supreme Court in 2012. Recently, the Supreme Court ruled and said the money was not being divided equally. The legislative members must now come up with a funding formula.
The board decided to take up requests received from Manning Baptist Church and the United Negro College Fund at their next meeting.
A school facilities financing update was given.
The construction projects were discussed by Tom Hughes of sfl&a and Rodney Alexander of Cumming. The Lake View projects are ahead of schedule. The Dillon High School auditorium and district office are on schedule for a late February completion. The piano from the old J.V. Martin auditorium is being refurbished and is going to be the centerpiece of the new auditorium. Students have moved into Latta Elementary School. The problems with the coder/freezers at Dillon Middle School were discussed.
Board Chairman Richard Schafer said he met with the historic schools group. He explained to the group that he was not opposed to what they want to do, but also explained the board’s legal and financial obligations. He said the only part of the facility that they are interested in is the auditorium.
After various reports, the board went into executive session to discuss a legal matter.
The next meeting is December 16th.
