Wildcats Top Polls; Gators, Vikings Prepare for Showdown

The Dillon Wildcats remained firmly on top of the statewide Class 2A polls this week, while Lake View and Latta are gearing up to clash this Friday night.

The Wildcats opened Region 8 conference play last week with a 43-14 win over Aynor and will bring a 6-0 record into this Friday’s game against Mullins. The Wildcats are 19-1-1 against the Auctioneers. Dillon won the very first encounter of the two teams in 1969, with Mullins tying in 1970 and earning their only win in 1971, when they defeated Dillon 8-0. The Wildcats have not lost a game to the Auctioneers since.

While Dillon remained at the top of the polls, Loris edged up to second place and Timberland dropped to third. The Lions defeated Marion 34-6 in their region opener and are also 6-0 on the season. Woodruff, Fairfield Central, and Chesnee held their places in the polls, and Newberry claimed seventh as Strom Thurmond fell out of the top 10. Powdersville moved up to eighth place, followed by Central and Batesburg-Leesville, both returning to the top 10.

The top five Class A leaders remained unchanged this week with Christ Church still in first place, followed by Allendale-Fairfax, Bamberg-Ehrhardt, Hemingway, and Estill. Lamar rose to sixth place, and Williston -Elko rose to ninth as McBee returned to the list in tenth place.
Great Falls and Calhoun County were tied for seventh.

The Lake View Wild Gators couldn’t quite crack the top 10 again this week after a 36-26 victory last week over the winless Green Sea Floyds Trojans. This week Lake View (4-2) will make a short trip to Latta to take on the Vikings, who are 1-5 on the season.

Latta has been struggling in the first half of the season, taking losses from three 2A schools and suffering a 48-6 loss at the hands of McBee. But Latta earned their first win against East Clarendon on September 26 and held powerhouse Hemingway to just six points last week. A win against the Gators could help turn Latta’s season around in conference play.

The top five teams in the 3A polls remained unchanged with Myrtle Beach and Hartsville leading the division, while in Class 4A, York plummeted from first to sixth. Dorman, Byrnes, Dutch Fork, North August, and Goose Creek are the new top five, and South Florence cracked the list in tenth.

In SCISA action, the Dillon Christian School Warriors will be traveling to Darlington to face Trinity-Byrnes this week. The Warriors are 5-1 overall and 2-1 in Region 1-A heading into the game while Trinity-Byrnes is 4-2 overall and will be coming off of a 42-19 loss to Holly Hill Academy.
