Phone, Internet Scams Being Reported

The Dillon County Sheriff’s office has received some complaints from citizens about receiving telephone calls, and the number showing on the caller ID would be their number or the number of a family member, a friend or a business number that the person is familiar with. The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office asks that you be aware of this scam called spoofing so you do not become a victim. Do not give any of your personal information (bank account numbers, social security number, date of birth) or any other information unless you know for sure who you are talking with. If you receive a call of this kind and you may have been scammed, contact your local law enforcement agency. This scam is occurring across the Pee Dee area and South  Carolina.

The City of Dillon Police Department is warning the public to beware of identity theft by scammers.
According to LCPL. T.J. Bourgoin, scammers called at least one customer of Major’s Cleaners on two occasions and asked her about her credit card information. Major’s Cleaners showed up on the called ID; however, this was a scammer NOT Major’s Cleaners. Duke Energy has been used also.
Scammers are also using fake e-mail accounts and fake W-2s and entering them into tax programs trying to obtain IRS payments. About 10 of these types of cases have been reported.
The public is reminded to safeguard their information.
