Lacy Lucien Hayes, Jr.

North Myrtle Beach, S.C.—Lacy Lucien Hayes, Jr., age 88, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. Graveside services will be held Friday at 4:00 at the Turkey Creek Cemetery in Lee County directed by Norton Funeral Home in Bishopville. Visitation will be Friday 2:00 – 3:30 at the Funeral Home.  Lacy was born at home on a farm near Latta, SC, a son of the late Lacy Lucien Hayes, Sr. and Hallie Newsome Hayes and most recently resided in North Myrtle Beach.  After finishing high school, Lacy joined the Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, earning 5 Battle Stars.  After WWII he began his nearly 40 year career in railroading announcing trains in Washington, D.C.  However, he spent the majority of his career in Florence, SC, where he retired as a railroad conductor.
Lacy enjoyed the outdoors, spending time as a young man hunting in the woods near his home and later in life enjoyed his time outdoors gardening and golfing.  He was an avid golfer and a member of country clubs in South Carolina and Florida. He is survived by his former wife, Johnnie F. Hayes; son, Lacy L. (Kelly) Hayes, III; grandson, Lacy L. (Sara) Hayes, IV; granddaughter, Julia P. (Shad) Rafferty; Great Granddaughters, Olivia K. Hayes, Brynn B. Hayes and Catherine K. Rafferty; his sister, Betty Morris, Columbia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jerry Kelley Hayes; two brothers, Carol Hayes & Bobby Hayes and a sister, Florine Armstrong. www.nortonfh.net.
