Lady ’Cats Battle Waccamaw for 1-0 Win

Dillon’s Lady Wildcats battled their way to a 1-0 win over Waccamaw’s Lady Warriors on Thursday, April 10 in Waccamaw.

The Wildcats left 13 runners on the bases in the win, scoring their lone run in the top of the fourth when Rebecca Callahan homered.

In the bottom of the third, Dillon pitcher Shaquailla German walked the first two Warriors and had a wild pitch. Shayna Covington threw out the runner trying t score on a fielder’s choice, and with runners on first and third, Leah McMillan caught a bunt pop-up and doubled off the runner at first to end the inning.

Callahan’s solo home run in the top of the fourth gave the Wildcats the lead, but the Wildcats left the bases loaded at the end of the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, German led off with a walk, followed by a line drive to first baseman McMillan who doubled up the runner at first. Waccamaw hit a grounder to second for the last out to end the game.

Shaquailla German earned the win on the mound, pitching all seven innings and facing 24 batters for just two hits, four walks, and one wild pitch, striking out nine. Waccamaw’s McKenzie Lugin took the loss, pitching seven innings for eight hits, one walk, one run, and four outs.

Callahan led the Wildcats at bat, going 3-for-4 with the home run, one RBI, and one run scored. Da’Kerhia Samuel went 2-for-4 for the Wildcats; Shayna Covington went 2-for-4; Tara Grimsley and Auh’Keria Smiling each went 1-for-4; and Taylor Price and Shar’Asia Samuel each went 1-for-3. The Wildcats had 11 hits in the win.

Waccamaw had just two hits in the effort with two errors.

In the field, Leah McMillan made eight put outs for the Wildcats with Shayna Covington, Shaquailla German, Erin Bailey, and Rebecca Callahan each made one. Covington also made three assists, with German, Bailey, and McMillan each adding one.

Dillon is now 12-2 overall and undefeated at 8-0 in Region 8-2A.

The Lady Wildcats will be at Hartsville on Monday, April 21, to resume varsity action and will host Loris on Wednesday, April 23, and Aynor on Friday, April 25.
