Vikings Earn Wins Over McBee, Trojans

Latta’s #17 Donell Stanley hits a home run to put the Vikings up 9-0 over the Trojans.

The Latta Vikings earned wins over McBee and Green Sea-Floyds in varsity baseball action this week.

The Vikings traveled to McBee on Thursday night for a 2-1 win over the Panthers. McBee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but Latta tied things with a run in the top of the fifth, pushing the game into extra innings. The Vikings claimed the win in the top of the eighth with a pinch hit RBI double from Eric McGirt.

Colby Lee earned the win on the mound, pitching three innings for one hit, two walks, and two outs. Jeremy Jenkins started for Latta, pitching five innings or seven outs and just one walk. McBee’s Hawkins took the loss, pitching all eight innings for 11 hits, 11 outs, two walks, and one earned run.

At bat for Latta, Josh Bowen went 3-for-4 with a run; Jackson Williams went 2-for-4 with one RBI; and Eric McGirt went 1-for-1 with one RBI.

McBee was led by A. Cohick, 2-for-4, and J. Barfield, 2-for-4 with one run scored.

On Friday, the Vikings traveled to Green Sea-Floyds on Friday night for a 10-0 win in five innings. Latta took a four run lead in the bottom of the first and added four in the second, capping the win with one run each in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.

Travis Power earned the win with three innings pitched for six outs, and John Kever Love pitched two innings of relief, striking out three in the no-hitter. Green Seas’s Strickland took the loss on the mound, and Morrow pitched 2.2 innings for the Trojans.

Donell Stanley led the Vikings, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and a home run. John Kever Love went 2-for-3 with two RBI; and Travis Power went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Latta improved to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in Region 8-A with the wins.

The Vikings were scheduled to play in Cheraw’s Spring Break Tournament this week and will return to regular season action on Monday, April 21, at home to host McBee at 5:30 p.m.
