Residents Must Have House Numbers

By Betsy Finklea
Even though it has been required for quite some time, there are still Dillon County residents who do not have their address numbers posted at their homes.
Many people may not realize that by not having their numbers posted that they are subject to a fine of $200 or imprisonment for a term not to exceed 30 days. Each day that you do not have your numbers posted is considered a separate offense.
All residents are encouraged to post their numbers properly to avoid a fine or jail time.
Numbers must be at least three inches high, be made of a durable material, and be a clearly visible material which is in contrasting color to the building. (See Article III in the box for all the details required for the posting of numbers.)
Having your numbers posted helps emergency services locate your home when you need them. It also helps your postal carrier if you receive your mail at home.
Anyone who needs more information should call the Dillon County E-9-1-1 Addressing Office at 774-1458.

Article III. Posting of Address Numbers

Number Placement
When each dwelling or building has been assigned its respective number(s), the owner, occupant, or agent will be required to display the assigned number(s) in accordance with the following provisions.

Size and Composition of the Numbers
Numbers shall not be less than three (3) inches in height, and shall be made of a durable and clearly visible material which is in contrasting color to the building.

Number Location
The numbers shall be conspicuously placed immediately above, on, or at the side, the proper door of each building so that the number can be seen clearly from the street line. Whenever the building is more that fifty (50) feet from the street line, or when the numbers are not visibly clear from the street line, the number must be placed near the walk, driveway, or common entrance to the building and upon both sides of the mailbox, gate post, fence, or other appropriate place so as to be easily read from the street line.

Penalties
Any person who violates any of the provisions of this ordinance shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and will be subject to a fine not exceeding two hundred ($200) dollars or to imprisonment for a term not to exceed thirty (30) days. Each day such violation continues shall constitute a separate offense!

For those people applying for an address to a location which has never been addressed, this will become your mailing Address. This situation will also require you to post your numbers ON YOUR RESIDENCE as well as BOTH SIDES OF YOUR MAILBOX.
