House Fire Occurs On Coates Street
A house fire occurred on Coates Street on Saturday morning, according to  reports. A man who tried to save his neighbor and a neighbor were taken to the burn center  for third degree burns as tehy were both burned in the fire. The mobile home was engulfed when firefighters arrived at the scene.

Public-Private Partnership
Board Member Appointed
A vacancy was filled on the Dillon County Public-Private Partnership Board (economic development) .The seat was vacant due to the resignation of Doug Miller. Councilman Joe Johnson made a motion to appoint Johnnie Luehrs. Luehrs serves as the executive director of the Dillon County Chamber of Commerce. The motion was seconded by Councilman Andrew Graves. All voted in favor of the motion.

Courthouse Repair Project Discussed
Dillon County Administrator Clay Young said at a recent council meeting that the Building Committee had met and discussed the changes to the Courthouse repair due to earthquake damage, window and door damage repairs, and security issues. He explained that Jody Munnerlyn, who was architect when the building was renovated, is working on the project. He said that after the State Archives & History reviewed the project, they asked that we only put up one door on the city-county complex side, instead of the proposed one on each side. Winna Miller said that the cost changed from $26,550 (Council approved in a prior meeting) to $21,800 due to reducing the doors from two to one. She also discussed keyed entrances and cameras and estimated the cost of this to be less than $5,000.  Chairman Scott asked for confirmation that the insurance monies will cover all of the costs involved with the total project. Ms. Miller and Mr. Young stated this was correct. Further discussion was held concerning security and use of Courthouse after the new justice building is complete. Mr. DuBose told that the Clerk of Court is also the Register of Deeds and where other functions of her office are to be housed at is up to her.

Bid Accepted On Bingham Fire Department
A bid was accepted on the Bingham Fire Department at a recent Dillon County Council meeting. Councilman Andrew Graves motioned to accept the low bid. Councilman Randy Goings seconded. Mr. Young explained that four sealed bids were received with the low bid being from Precision Contractors Inc., Laurinburg, NC, in the amount of $187,535.00. He explained that this is a turn-key job for the heater in the truck bay and that the cost may increase for the cost of the bid bond. He stated that this will be funded from the capital projects sales tax monies. All were in favor.

Gilman Scholarship
Awarded To Local Student
HARTSVILLE (readMedia)—The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has awarded Coker College freshman Andre McMillon, a business administration major from Dillon, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad in Costa Rica. McMillon is one of over 700 undergraduates selected to receive the scholarship.

Holding Holiday Story
Time And Crafts
Dillon County Library Headquarters will present “DASHING THROUGH THE LIBRARY” for children 5 and under. They will have story time and making holiday crafts. This will last through December 20,  from 10 a.m-11 a.m.
