Union UMC Hears From Guest Speaker From Pee Dee Community Action

Ms. Sonja Jackson with the Pee Dee Community Action Partnership spoke at Union United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 30.
Ms. Jackson spoke with passion about what the agency does and the ongoing needs they have in serving the needs of the homeless and abused in our area. They help provide homes for the homeless, a place of safety for those who need shelter from an abusive situation.
The Union United Methodist Church chose this agency for their June mission action project. The church collected clothing, shoes, toilet tissue, paper towels and hygiene products. Ms. Jackson shared with us the dire needs that the people she helps on a daily basis have. Some come with nothing; some with quickly grabbed items. The children often come without clothing and toys.
Once settled, clients need to look at a self-sustaining life- that means a job, housing and the necessities to start a new life. She spoke of those who cannot be helped, who have been homeless for so long that walls are too confining for them and after a short while, they leave.
Some come needing help with additions and are referred to the right program for the maximum help possible. Ms. Jackson stated that she needed community involvement in finding reasonable housing and businesses willing to offer jobs. Everybody needs to feel like they can support themselves and regain dignity. Some of the needs they have are basic household items such as towels, sheets, bedspreads, men, women and children’s clothing, toilet tissue, paper towels, beds, and hygiene products.
The members at Union United Methodist Church have decided to continue to help support this very worthwhile cause in the community.
Anyone wishing to help can contact the Pee Dee Community Action Agency at 843-774-9038, extension 101, and ask for Ms. Felecia David or Ms. Sonja Jackson.
