Vikings Earn 11-2 Win in Playoffs

After receiving a bye in the first round of the District VIII Class A baseball playoffs, the Latta Vikings earned an 11-2 win over Whale Branch on Saturday.

Latta took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added one run each in the second and third innings. Whale Branch got on the board in the top of the third and added their second run in the fourth to trail 7-2, but the Vikings added two runs in the bottom of the inning to pull further ahead. Latta added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and held off Whale Branch in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Travis Power got the win on the mound, pitching four innings for two hits, two earned runs, three walks, and five outs. Whale Branch’s Delaney took the loss, pitching six innings for 11 runs, six earned runs, four hits, eight walks, and six outs.

John Kever Love led the Vikings at bat, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. The Vikings had four hits in the win, while Whale Branch had three.

Latta improved to 18-2 as they moved on to the District VIII title game on Wednesday night at 5:00 p.m. The Vikings will host the winner of Monday’s loser bracket game between Whale Branch and Cross.
