Lady Wildcats Dominate at Cheraw Spring Swing Tournament

Dillon’s Lady Wildcats defeated Darlington, Lancaster, and Lamar on the way to winning the Lady Braves Spring Swing softball tournament on Monday, April 1, and Tuesday, April 2.

Dillon took a 2-0 lead over Darlington in the first inning and added two runs each in the third and fourth to lead 6-0. The Falcons got their only hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth and the Lady Wildcats added a run in the fifth to seal the 7-1 victory.

Darby Hamer picked up the win on the mound, pitching all five innings for two hits, one run, one earned run, one walk, and six outs. Darlington’s R. Sherrill pitched four innings for five hits, five runs, three earned runs, five walks, and one out.

Shayna Covington went 2-for-2 with a RBI and an inside-the-park home run, and Tara Grimsley went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run to lead Dillon at bat. Rebecca Callahan also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as the Lady Wildcats racked up eight hits and one error in the win.

Darlington’s Brittany Norton went 1-for-2 with a home run and a RBI and P. Cooper went 1-for-2 with a double. The Falcons had just two hits.

In the game against Lancaster, the Lady Bruins got two runs in the top of the first inning but Dillon responded with three in the bottom and added two in the second and six in the third to end the game 11-2 in three innings.

Shaquailla German pitched all three innings for the win, allowing just one hit and two runs with five walks, four outs, and two hit by pitch. Lancaster’s Katy Ghent took the loss, pitching all three innings for 13 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned runs, three walks, and five outs.

Taylor Price went 2-for-2 with a two doubles and a RBI to lead the Wildcats at bat. Shayna Covington went 2-for-3 with a RBI; Tara Grimsley went 1-for-1 with a RBI; Erin Bailey went 2-for-2 with a double; Rebecca Callahan went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI; and Darby Hamer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Dillon had a total of 13 hits in the win.

Lancaster’s Elizabeth Gaston went 1-for-2 for the Lady Bruins’ only hit of the game. The Bruins had one error in the loss.

Finally, the Wildcats took down Lamar 11-0 in four innings to wrap up the Spring Swing. Dillon took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added five runs in the second and four in the third to seal the win.

Taylor Price picked up the win on the mound for the Wildcats, pitching all four innings for three hits, two walks, and six outs. Lamar’s S. Nettles took the loss, pitching three innings for nine hits, 11 runs, 10 earned runs, one walk, and two outs.

Dillon’s Shaquailla German went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Lady Wildcats at bat. Shayna Covington went 2-for-2 for two RBIs; Tara Grimsley went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs; and Da’Kerhia Samuel went 2-for-3. Dillon had 11 hits and one error in the win.

Lamar’s Haylen Anderson, C. Copeland, and T. Durant each went 1-for-2 to make up all three of Lamar’s hits. The Silver Foxes had one error in the loss.

Dillon improved to 13-1 overall and maintains an undefeated 6-0 record in Region 8-2A. Dillon’s only loss this season came at the hands of Marlboro County, who defeated Dillon 3-1 in pre-season tournament action.
