Grant Nygaard

Grant Nygaard was educated in Red Springs, and graduated from Red Springs High School. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Grant worked for Dixiana Carpets in Dilion, S.C.; Days Inn of Rowland, N.C., BB&T Service Center of Lumberton, N.C.; A&S Gas of Rowland, N.C.; and Shell Convenience Mart of Rowland, N.C.

The funeral will be 9 a.m. today at Rowland United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Rowland Cemetery.

Grant was baptized at the Lake City Presbyterian Church in Lake City, Fla., at a young age. He later joined the Red Springs Presbyterian Church. Grant married Helen Ayres Waddell on July 9, 1994, at the Fair Bluff Baptist Church in Fair Bluff. At the time of Grant’s passing, he was a member of the Rowland United Methodist Church of Rowland.

Grant passionately enjoyed teaching Sunday school in Goldsboro, and conducting Bible Studies and sometimes preaching at the Rowland United Methodist Church. He loved his church work and truly believed in spreading gospel any way he could. This included buying Bibles for children, witnessing anywhere he could and helping those who were down on their luck.

Grant’s pasttimes included coaching football and baseball. He coached with the Recreation Program of Robeson County in Red Springs in Rowland. He devoted 18 years to coaching and the Rowland Blue Jays baseball team won a county championship during his tenure. Anyone who knew Grant knew he was an avid Carolina Tar Heels fan.

Grant Nygaard was preceded in death by his father, Harold Hansen Nygaard Jr.; his maternal grandparents, Wilbur Jackson and Aletha Jackson Price of Rowland; and his paternal grandparents, Harold Hansen and Aileen Grisham Nygaard of Lake City, Fla.

Left to cherish his memory in his loving and devoted family are his wife, Helen A. Nygaard of Rowland; his only son, Tanner Hansen Nygaard of Rowland; his mother, June L. Nygaard of Rowland; his brother, Clint Townsend Nygaard of Stedman; his sister-in-law, Rona of Stedman; his nieces and nephews, Graham Nygaard, Eva Jane Nygaard, Mark Nygaard, Cory Nygaard, Emma Nygaard, Joanna Nygaard, Robert Allen Nales, and Rachel Pales Pittman; his mother-in-law, Frances Waddell of Fair Bluff; and a host of relatives and friends who all held places in his heart.
