Local Players Receive Honors

Several local players and coaches have been named to All-State teams, with several selected to participate in upcoming All-Star and Select games.

Dillon’s Coach Tony Washington was named High School Sports Report’s Class AA Girls Track Coach of the Year, with Dillon’s Zipporah Lighty and Kedisha Davis each named All-State.

In softball, Latta’s Dallas Sweat was selected to play in the Class A/4A North-South All-Star games. The team will include East Clarendon’s Alexus Watford and Krystin Goodwin, while the North squad will include Chesterfield’s Christian Stokes.

The North-South All-Star softball games will be held June 12 through June 14 at USC Aiken.

The All-State teams were also recently announced, with Latta’s Chelsea Welty and Lake View’s Kayla Sanderson named to the Class A squad. The team also includes East Clarendon’s Leslie Altman and Alexus Watford, Hannah-Pamplico’s Taylor Evans, Johnsonville’s Alyssa Hinson, and Green Sea-Floyds’ Hope Elliot.

On the Class 2A squad, Dillon’s Shaquailla German and Shayna Covington made the cut. Andrews’ Taylor Headden and Kara Lambert, Alison Adams of Hanahan, Miranda Rogers of Swansea, and Palmetto’s Victoria Williams and Ryan Rector were also named to the list.

Dillon’s Shaquailla German, Darby Hamer, Tara Grimsley, and Shayna Covington were all named to the High School Sports Reports Class AA All-State team. Latta’s Chelsea Welty and Macy Hyatt and Lake View’s Kayla Sanderson and Morgan Herlong were all named to the Class A team.

Dillon Christian School’s Reagan Massengale and Lauren Lee were both named to the HSSR’s SCISA All-State team.

HSSR’s All Rookie softball team includes Dillon’s Rebecca Callahan, Latta’s Dori Webster, Lake View’s Ashley Rogers, and Dillon Christian School’s Sara Fitzgibbons.

Dillon’s Jamie Callahan has been chosen for the South Carolina/North Carolina Select games. Callahan went 7-1 this season, striking out 113 players in 55 innings for Dillon.

Lake View’s Kip Herlong will coach the South squad in the game, which matches the top seniors from North and South Carolina. The games will be held June 14 and 15 at Coastal Carolina.

Callahan is also a finalist for the 2012 High School Sports Report’s Mr. Baseball award, with the winner to be announced at their annual banquet on June 10.

Dillon’s Daniel Huggins and Kwinton Smith were chosen to play for the South in the Class 2A/3A North-South All-Star games, while Dillon’s head baseball coach Gregg Dozier will be the coach for the South. The South squad will also include Marion’s Chris Washington, Aynor’s Hunter Burnette, and Waccamaw’s Paxton Buckner.

The North-South All-Star games will be held at the Cal Ripken Baseball Experience on June 15 and 16.

Callahan, Huggins, and Smith were all named Class AA All-State by the HSSR. In Class A, HSSR named Lake View’s Chris Ford and Hunter Walters All-State.

The HSSR’s 2012 All Rookie team includes Dillon’s Weston Bailey and Duncan Callahan and Latta’s John Kever Love.

Dillon Christian School’s Townsend Hamilton was also named to HSSR’s 2012 SCISA All-State golf team.
