Fire Chiefs Working To Reduce ISO Rating

By Larry Cox, President, Dillon County Fire Chiefs Association

Latta, Floyd Dale and Oak Grove Chiefs have agreed to attempt to reduce their ISO Rating to a straight 7 across their respective fire districts. At the present time most of us have split ratings either 6/9 or 7/9, with this rating you have to have a fire hydrant within a 1000 feet of your property. What this means is your ISO Rating would be a 7 no matter how far from a hydrant your property is located. When this is done it should save all residences about 30% on their homeowners policies. We will have to identify static water sources, whether it is ponds, canals or even swimming pools and then mark them. Each department will have to prepare a plan for supplying water (at least 250 GPM) to any where in their fire district. This will take a lot of hard work and a good bit of teamwork on all our parts, but by working together we will accomplish this goal.
