Chuck Mackey

Charles George “Chuck” Mackey, faithful servant of God and country, departed this life and entered into eternal rest on May 2nd, 2012 at his home in Conway, SC. Mr. Mackey was born in the USA on November 21st, 1935, a son of the late Albert Garth and Edith Viola Schell Mackey-Brown. He was a member of Buck Creek Baptist Church in Longs, SC. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Mackey was a retired postal employee, having a career that spanned over a 43 year period. Twenty of his years he served in the postmaster position at Society Hill, Longs, Little River, Murrells Inlet, and Latta, all SC offices. He was a retired veteran of the US Navy and US Naval Reserve, having served 35 years and reaching the Chief Petty Officer ranks. He was a retired member of the National Association of Postmasters of the US (NAPUS), a life member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and a life member of the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association (NERA). He was a member at large of the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve Association and an avid and faithful supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). At the time of his death, Mr. Mackey was employed as a sales associate with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Elinor Beck, and Leona Barnes and a brother-in-law Walter Callen.
Survivors include his wife Geraldean “Gerri” Mackey of the home, daughter Donna R. Lay and husband Ellis of Tabor City, NC, daughter Judy Marshall and husband George of Murrells Inlet, SC, sisters Dorothy H. Callen of Harlington, TX, Margaret “Peg” Coverdale of Massillon, OH, Charlotte G. Brown and husband Boyd of Navarre, OH, brother Donald L. Mackey of Butler, PA, grandchildren Benjamin and Elizabeth Lay of Myrtle Beach, SC, Daniel Morgan of Murrells Inlet, SC, Heather Jackson and Fred Warren Taylor III of Ladson, SC, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 4:00 PM with visitation one hour prior to services at Buck Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Larry Allen and the Rev. Leverne Ard will be officiating. A full military committal service will be conducted at the Brookwood Cypress Mausoleum in Hill Crest Cemetery in Conway, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Trust Fund in honor of grandson, Benjamin Lay.
