Inmates from the South Carolina Department of Corrections presented a program for the second and third grade students at South Elementary the last week in March. Four inmates, accompanied by a correctional officer, came to the school to discuss their incarceration. Each inmate discussed their childhood and the types of bad habits they were involved in from a young age. Then they told the students what they did that was against the law and what is was like to be locked up in a state prison. This program is held annually for the boys and girls in hopes that they can learn from these inmates’ mistakes. The program always ends with the visitors encouraging the students to Get Smart and Stay Smart!
After the inmates departed, Jayne C. Lee, principal, reviewed the information discussed and encouraged the students to always do what is right. She stressed the importance of following rules and obeying laws. As a culminating activity, the school’s P.T.O. sponsored a follow-up essay contest. Grade level winners received Easter buckets and treats, as well as, monetary prizes. First place winners received $25.00, second place winners received $15.00 and third place winners received $10.00. Twelve students were also recognized as having Honorable Mention. They received Easter buckets with treats. Congratulations to all the boys and girls that participated. Their essays showed just how much they had learned!
