City Receives Silver Palmetto Award

The City of Dillon has been selected to receive South Carolina’s 2011 Silver Palmetto Award.
The award is presented annually by the SC Commission on Disabilities and Special Needs to the South Carolina city or town that made the most outstanding contribution to people with disabilities the previous year.
Commission Chairman Fred Lynn presented the award to Dillon Mayor Todd Davis recently during the Municipal Association of South Carolina meeting in Columbia. The Commission is the governing board of the SC Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN).
“Clearly the City of Dillon has made citizens with disabilities a priority and demonstrates exceptional support for the people we serve,” Commissioner Lynn said at the presentation.
“The Commission recognizes Dillon’s outstanding leadership in building partnerships between people with and without disabilities. Their example is one to be honored and celebrated.”
The City of Dillon, among many other contributions, co-partnered in a recycling project with the Marion-Dillon County Board of Disabilities and Wellman Plastics Recycling, Inc. creating jobs for approximately 30 people with disabilities. Employment is a priority of DDSN and Dillon is applauded for their efforts.
Mayor Davis accepted the Silver Palmetto Award on behalf of the City of Dillon. He said, “We are honored to accept this award. I personally have a passion for these special people. In Dillon, we highly value people with disabilities and special needs and the important contributions they make to our workplaces, neighborhoods and our community.”
Dillon was nominated for the annual award by the Marion-Dillon County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. DDSN is the state agency that provides supports and services to South Carolinians with severe, lifelong disabilities of intellectual and related disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.
