PASS Parent Nights Held At South And Stewart Heights

Stewart Heights Elementary and South Elementary held special assessment meetings for the third grade students and their parents the last week in January.
PASS Parent Night at South was held on Thursday, January 26 and at Stewart Heights on Tuesday, January 31.
The purpose of the meetings was to provide parents with useful information related to the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards.
PASS is the state-mandated test that is administered to all public school students in grades 3-8 in May.
Results are used at the state level to rate school performance and at the federal level to denote Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
Parents, students and guests enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the lunchroom staff before the program began. Jayne C. Lee, principal, provided information to the parents in attendance about the PASS test.
Later, parents and students visited classrooms. Teachers went over sample items students may encounter on the test and they discussed test taking tips that would help the children. Parents that attended were given a PASS notebook that contained sample items in English Language Arts, math, science and social studies.
Hopefully, with a concerted effort between home and school, all students will meet grade level standards, which will put them at a proficient level. Parents and students were invited to attend a second meeting in March. At that time, teachers will give out additional sample items and work their child has completed in class. Both schools had great turnout for the meetings. South had approximately 87 in attendance and Stewart Heights had over 120. Student head count was tied with 47% represented at both schools.
