Vision Educational Center, community partners and supporters will honor Mrs. Ruby Woods Carter with the MLK Lifetime Achievement Award on January 16th.
Mrs. Carter is the youngest of ten children born to James and Mary Jane Woods in Allendale, SC. She attended the public schools of Allendale County, graduating second in her high school class. She received her undergraduate degree from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mrs. Carter also has studied at several other institutions of higher learning, including Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA., Williams College in Williamstown, MA. and South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC. She earned a master’s degree in counseling education from South Carolina State.
Her career as an educator extended over a period of more than forty years. After graduating from Spelman at age twenty, she began teaching in Dillon. In addition to her responsibilities as a fourth grade teacher, she became a coach, a counselor, and a mentor in the Dillon “Colored” school which later became the Gordon Schools. She served as a high school and junior high school guidance counselor for most of her career.
Married to Dolphus Carter, Jr., the Carters are the parents of four children, Rene’, Dolphus, III (deceased), Jane, and Stanley. In addition, the Carters claim Della, Sheila, and Sylvia as ‘adopted’ daughters. She is the proud grandmother of eight and the great-grandmother of two.
Mrs. Carter is extensively involved in a range of religious, civic, and educational activities.
She has served on numerous state and national boards and committees. She recently completed a six-year term as a member of the American Hospital Association Section for Long Term Care and Rehabilitation Committee, which afforded her the opportunity to travel throughout the United States for meetings and other activities.
A long-time member of St. Stephens United Methodist, Mrs. Carter remains active in numerous church ministries in her local church. Regional and state church entities.
She is a member of the St. Stephens United Methodist Women. She has the United Methodist Women in various capacities at the state and regional level. Currently, she serves as a Communion Steward at St. Stephens and she also enjoys teaching an adult Sunday School class and attending Bible Study.
