Local Historical Sites Provide Educational Excursions In County

The Dillon County Historical Society maintains the Dillon County Museum in Latta, SC and the JW. Dillon House Museum in Dillon. These two historical sites are available for group tours and for individuals to enjoy and learn more about the history and culture of the area. Both sites are open at specified hours by volunteer docents. (Dillon County Museum, Latta: Hours -Tuesdays from 2-4 p.m., Thursdays from 2-4 p.m.,, Sundays from 2-4 p.m.; J.W. Dillon House Museum, Dillon: Hours- Tuesdays from 2-4 p.m., Thursdays from 2-4 p.m. Tours or visits can be scheduled by calling 774-6122.) Without the docents, it wouldn’t be possible to have these important historical museums open to the public on a regular basis.
The operation of these two museums is an important asset to Dillon County citizens and it affords the opportunity for tourists to visit our area and learn more about our history.
The J.W. Dillon House is the last home of J.W. Dillon, the founder of Dillon County. It was built in 1890 and its on the Historical National Register. It is a classic example of Victorian architecture.
The Dillon County Museum is located in Latta. It was the office of Dr. Edwards, MD and later his son, who has a dentist. The museum has historic memorabilia from the county. Included in the museum are the dental office, doctor’s office, the military room, the document room and agricultural room. Also, on the grounds is a historical/antique caboose with railroad memorabilia.
The Dillon County Court House is located in Dillon. It is the classic example of Beaux Arts architecture. The Court House has been renovated and the grounds have been landscaped. The courthouse block is one of the most beautiful historic sites in the state. Located on the fourth floor of the courthouse is the Hall of History, which is sponsored by the Dillon County Historical Society.
In Latta, there is Veteran’s Park. In the park, there is the Old Vadalia School House and the Old Post Office/ General Store, which are open for scheduled tours.
Page’s Mill Pond is located in the Town of Lake View. It is a majestic look at the rustic past and the simple country scenery that can be found in Dillon County. Bear Swamp Baptist Church is located near Lake View. It is historically known as the Meeting House. On December 22, 1801, one acre of land on the north side of Bear Swamp was deeded for the use of the Baptist Society. Local tradition says that the meeting house which stood on the tract was built in the 1780s and was used a camp site for travelers between Fayetteville, NC and Georgetown, SC. In 1831, the Baptist Society was constituted as Bear Swamp Baptist Church. These historical museums and sites offer people the opportunity to spend a day in Dillon County and enjoy learning more about the history and culture of this county in the heart of the Pee Dee.
