It was a busy weekend for Latta with the teams taking on the top two Region 8-A teams, Carvers Bay and Creek Bridge.
The boys continued a rough season with a 70-55 loss to Creek Bridge on Friday.
The Creek Bridge Warriors started the game strong, outscoring Latta 20-12 in the first quarter. Latta rallied in the second, 17-13, but the Warriors outscored them in the third and fourth, 16-11 and 21-15, to put them 15 points ahead for the win.
Vic Williams scored a game-high 20 points for Creek Bridge, with Rakeem Williams and Charles Green each contributing 19 points to the win. Rashawn Rogers added eight points, and Chris Crawford added four.
Hy’Keem McClellan led the Vikings with a team-high 14 points with She’Quan Page adding 11 and Donell Stanley scoring 10. Rajit McFadden made nine points, Jonathan Vereen made seven, and Travise Kinney added four.
Saturday’s make-up game against Carvers Bay also ended in disappointment, with the Vikings losing 64-47. The Bears outscored Latta in all four quarters, 15-10, 15-9, 18-14, and 16-14.
Teondre Bromell scored a game-high 23 points for Carvers Bay, with Dashaun Aiken adding 15 points to the victory. Also scoring were Rayshod Pittman, 9; Tyrone Brown, 7; Thomas Small, 6; Rashawn Morris, 2, and Alton Nesbitt 3.
For the Vikings, She’Quan Page was the team-high scorer with 20 points. Darren LeGette and Donell Stanley each added six points for Latta, and HyKeem McClellan, Jonathan Vereen, and Rajit McFadden each made five points for the Vikings.
The win for Carvers Bay keeps them on top of Region 8-A with a season record of 11-6 overall and 5-1 in the region. On Tuesday, they’ll face Creek Bridge, the number two team in Region 8-A, whose record is currently 13-3 for the season and 4-1 in the region.
Latta’s record, meanwhile, falls to 1-10 in regular season action and 1-5 in the region.
GIRLS
The Vikings may be facing a losing season, but the Lady Vikings are on a hot streak since their return from Christmas break. That streak continued on Friday with a 55-30 win over Carvers Bay.
The Lady Vikings outscored the Bears 10-4 in the first quarter to give them a comfortable six point lead, and though the Bears would narrowly outscore Latta in the second, 12-11, they were never able to close that gap. Latta led the third and fourth 20-9 and 14-5 to secure the win by 25 points.
Quasheika Page led Latta with a game-high 28 points, seven boards, five steals and three assists. Brittany Burgess added eight points to the win, and Kierra Johnson added four points, two blocks, and three steals. Also scoring were Charice Braddy, 4 points; Fereshia Paige, 2; Tianna Deberry, 3; Jessica Evans, 5; and Brittney Burrell, 1.
For Creek Bridge, Lashana Crawford and Shante Williams each scored 10 points. Dekira Hemingway added four, and Shawla Grays, Jasmine Potts, and Akaya Lakin each added two.
Latta next traveled to Carvers Bay for a make-up game on Saturday, where the Lady Vikings dominated Carvers Bay in the second for a 58-23 win.
The two teams ended the first quarter tied at 6-6, but Latta outscored them in every other quarter, starting with a devastating 25-5 second quarter. The Vikings led 16-2 in the third and 11-10 in the fourth to put them ahead 35 points for the win.
Latta was led by Cherise Braddy with a game-high 13 points, followed by Quasheika Page with 10. Jessica Evans added nine, Tianna Deberry added eight, and Kierra Johnson scored seven. Michia Johnson and Cora Owens each added four points, and Brittany Burgess contributed three.
For the Bears, Jasmine Cobb earned a team-high score of 12 points, with Jia Green and L. Young adding four each. Jasmin Waites contributed one point, and Rhomona Reed scored two.
The wins elevate the Latta girl’s record to 6-5 overall and 6-0 in the region to make them the top girls team in Region 8-A. Johnsonville is currently in second place with a 5-1 region record.
Up next the Latta boys and girls teams will face Hemingway tonight at 6:00 p.m. before hosting Carvers Bay on Tuesday, February 1. The Hemingway boys are 5-8 and 2-3 in the region this season, while the lady Tigers are 5-6 overall and 2-3 in Region 8-A.
