The Dillon Junior Varsity football team took a 20-0 win over the visiting Purnell Swett Rams in the season opener in Dillon on Thursday evening, August 29.
Both teams got off to a slow start while being penalized several times. As the game progressed the penalties slowed.
The first half was scoreless as both teams were unable to move the football consistently and cross the goal line.
Dillon’s #13 kicked off to open the season for Dillon.
The Rams faked a punt on fourth down and picked up a first down to the surprise of all in attendance. However, Dillon’s defense held, and the Rams were forced to punt. Dillon took over with 4:12 remaining in the first quarter. Dillon managed to pick up a first down on fourth down. Time expired in the first quarter with the score knotted at 0.
The Rams took over on downs and after being sacked for a loss, the Rams’#2 managed to carry for a big first down.
After overthrowing his receiver, #2 again carried for a first down. The Rams were forced to punt with 1:05 remaining in the half. Dillon got on the scoreboard in the third quarter with 5:52 remaining on a carry by #2. Dillon’s 2-point conversion attempt failed.
The Rams were unable to pick up the necessary yards, and Dillon took over only to lose control of the football on an interception. But, Dillon quickly regained control on a fumble recovery.
Dillon’s #2 scored on a long run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Dillon’s #4 carried the football in for a 2-point conversion. Dillon’s lead was now 14-0.
Dillon again got good field position by taking over on the 26-yard line after a punt by the Rams.
Dillon’s #4 scored the final touchdown of the game with 7:20 remaining. The PAT was blocked.
Purnell Swett was again forced to punt. Dillon took over with 5:27 remaining in the game but was unable to move the football. The Rams took over with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game but were unable to move the ball as time expired.
