Dillon County Council Selects New County Administrator

By Betsy Finklea
The Dillon County Council selected a new county administrator at a called meeting on Thursday, November 1st.

The field had been narrowed to three candidates—Wilson Anthony Clyburn, Lisa Gray, and Mackie Hayes.
Candidates were interviewed during an executive session.
After the executive session, it was announced that Gray had withdrawn her application. A motion to accept the withdrawal of her application was made by Councilman Archie Scott and seconded by Councilman James Campbell. All approved.
Councilman T.F. “Buzzy” Finklea, Jr., then made a motion to hire Mackie Hayes as the county administrator. This was seconded by Councilman Harold Moody. The motion failed in 4-3 vote with Finklea, Moody, and Chairman Stevie Grice voting for the motion, and Councilmen A. Scott, Campbell, Gerome McLeod, and Jack Scott voting against it.
Councilman A. Scott then made a motion to hire Wilson Anthony Clyburn. This motion was seconded by Councilman McLeod.
Councilmen A. Scott, McLeod, Campbell, and J. Scott voted in favor of hiring Clyburn. Councilmen Finklea, Grice, and Moody voted against the motion.
Councilman Moody said that they should let Gray, who is the interim county administrator, stay on until the new county administrator is comfortable with his new position. Councilman J. Scott said that would be the new administator’s decision.
The Herald contacted Clyburn who provided the following statement, “It is certainly an honor to be appointed as Dillon County’s next County Administrator. I will be accepting this appointment and will begin serving Dillon County on December 3, 2018.”
The Herald has made a Freedom of Information Act request to the county asking for the resume/application of Clyburn, but the county had not provided it as of press time.
