Mayor Talks About Declining County Economic Development Position

Dillon Mayor Todd Davis

By Betsy Finklea
City of Dillon Mayor Todd Davis spoke briefly about a job offer he received, accepted, and then declined the next day at the City of Dillon council meeting on Monday night.
Davis said he was offered the Dillon County economic development position. Davis accepted the position last Friday, but then changed his mind and declined the position on Saturday. He said it was one of the hardest decisions he had to make. He had asked the county to delay the announcement until Monday in case he changed his mind which he did.
He said going forward he thought the county and city should sit down to discuss things. Davis said he was one in a line of people who had been offered the job. He also noted that politics has gotten “so horrendous” in the county.
Davis said that he had accepted the job on an interim basis. He thought it would be something that he would have loved doing and was excited about. He said he is excited about the inland port.
He said another concern was that if County Administrator Rodney Berry was going to take on more in the economic development area then what was he needed for.
Davis said returning to his office that afternoon after accepting the job he realized he did not have time to deal with his clients and the economic development position and the mayor’s job. He said he declined the position the next day. Davis said he hoped the county would find a good person.
Davis said he would like to discuss with the county finding funding to expand infrastructure. He said it cannot all be on the city’s shoulders.
Davis said he appreciates the support he received by those who thought he would be a good person for the position, but said the backlash he received was more than he anticipated.
Davis said it was a tough decision. He hopes the county finds the right person and wished them well.
