Dorothy Jean Rogers Binnicker

COLUMBIA – Mrs. Dorothy Binnicker passed away Saturday, January 13, 2018 at age 88. Born on March 15, 1929 in Lake View, SC, to Edward C. and Mary Elizabeth Wiggins Rogers, she spent her early years on a tobacco farm with numerous brothers and sisters. Dreaming of exploring life beyond the country, she graduated from Lake View High School and enrolled in Columbia Commercial College at age 16. Upon graduation in 1946, she began working with the South Carolina Employment Security Commission where she served for 11 years. It is there she met her husband of 60 years and began her life as wife and mother. Her continued hunger for learning and higher education brought her to enroll in Columbia College and later to the University of South Carolina where she received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Sociology (1977) and later a Masters in Education (1980). Fulfilling her commitment to ensuring all had equal access to education, she devoted 20 years teaching in Richland County Public Schools including William S Hall Institute and Olympia Center for the Emotionally Handicapped.
She was an active member of Kathwood Baptist Church, serving in various capacities including Education Committee, and numerous public service committees.
Surviving are her sons, Mabry LeRoy Binnicker of Key West, Fla., Jeffery Lee Binnicker (Kim) of Columbia; daughters, Jean Binnicker Morris (Wayne) of Murrels Inlet, Madge Binnicker McNaboe of Columbia; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Binnicker Brown (Christian) of New Orleans, La., Rachel Binnicker of Madison, WI, Caroline and Catherine Morris of Murrels Inlet, and Garrett and Casey McNaboe of Columbia; brothers Douglas Ray Rogers and Bobby Kenneth Moody of Dillon County.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Mabry Binnicker; son, William Rogers “Roger” Binnicker; grandson, Ryan Alexander Morris; siblings, Gentry LeRoy Rogers, Ed Rogers, Jr, Paul G. Rogers, Marian Rogers Carter and Patricia Threat Dimmery.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Kathwood Baptist Church, with burial immediately following in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg, SC. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 15, 2018, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
