Carolyn M. Thomas

Carolyn Moody Thomas entered the Heavenly Kingdom on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. Born on May 3, 1929 in Dillon County, she was the daughter of the late C.W. and Mattie Moody. After moving from the county into the town of Dillon, Carolyn met her future husband, James Lee Thomas, with whom she was blessed with a wonderful marriage of 54 years.
Carolyn graduated from Dillon High School and subsequently received a BS degree in Elementary Education from Columbia College. She began her teaching career in Dillon County. She continued her career with District 7 in Spartanburg County as a classroom teacher at Freemont Elementary School and Park Hills Elementary School and as a Language Arts Specialist at Chapman Elementary School.
Carolyn was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg since 1952. She was an active member of the Early Bird and Al Clark Sunday School classes. She volunteered in the media department and the church nursery. She also was a youth training union leader. Carolyn was active in the Women’s Missionary Union. Outside of her church, Carolyn was a member of the Cema Chreitzberg Garden Club and enjoyed line dancing with her group at the Shepherd’s Center.
After her children were grown, Carolyn had the pleasure of supporting her husband with his involvement in the SC Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Spartanburg County Arts Council.
Carolyn was predeceased by her husband Jim. She is survived by her children, James Lee Thomas, Jr. (Nan), Patricia Thomas Goerke (Brian), and Richard Carson Thomas (Liz). Grandchildren who brought joy to her life are: Meredith Thomas Morrow (Chad), Carson L. Thomas, Morgan L. Goerke (John Hardy III), Devon M. Barnes (Adam), McKinley C. Thomas, Magill E. Jean (Kyle), and Curran M. Thomas (Jaime). Loving great-grandchildren are: Charlie C. Thomas, Fischer J. Morrow, Camden L. Thomas, Harris P. Morrow, and Nolan T. Barnes.
Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 AM Friday, January 12, 2018, in the Parlor at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg with funeral services following at 11:15 AM in the Chapel, conducted by The Rev. Dr. Donald J. Wilton and The Rev. Bob Neely. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
In lieu of flowers, memorials made be made to First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306; or a charity of one’s choice.
