Latta Rescue Squad will be celebrating our 50th year in business on Saturday, May 20th. A drop-in will be from 2-5 p.m.
There will be refreshments, a bouncy house, and an autograph and selfie session with Donnell Stanley (bring your footballs and sharpies).
The need for a rescue squad was recognized in 1967 when a Latta citizen was injured in a house fire, and with the leadership of Bill Hatch, a local contractor, this necessity was placed into execution, and on May 18, 1968, Latta Rescue Squad was officially chartered by the South Carolina Secretary of State.
Every weekend, the all-volunteer staff would stand at the intersection of Highways 38 and 301, and 38 and 501, to collect money to survive. They received their initial Red Cross First Aid training from two members of Dillon Rescue.
The rescue squad is still alive today, and is 25 members strong with all volunteers. No one on the rescue squad has ever received any financial compensation for their services. They survive mainly from donations.
