AARP Holds Meeting And Driving Class

The Dillon Area Chapter #5336 of AARP, Inc. met on Monday, February 13, 2017, in the meeting room of the Council on Aging with 26 members and three guests in attendance. Mickie Singleton, president, presided and conducted the usual opening rituals. Speakers were introduced. Doris Gleason, AARP South Carolina Director of Community Action, presented an overview of the Medicare Premium Support Model. Dillon Chief of Police David Lane accompanied by Cpl. Ryan Berry spoke giving tips on “Keeping Safe at Home and Out of the Home”. Questions from members were generously answered and speakers were graciously thanked for their remarks.
The business session followed during which officers and committees gave reports. The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
The Dillon Area Chapter #5336 of AARP, Inc. met on Monday, March 13, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in the meeting room of the Council on Aging with 23 members and one guest in attendance. President Mickie Singleton presided issuing a very warm welcome to all and conducted opening rituals.
The business session followed during which officers and committees reported.
Vice-president Christine Carmichael introduced the speaker, Mr. Cliff McBride, attorney with South Carolina Legal Services which is a statewide law firm which provides civil legal services to protect the rights of low income South Carolinians and represents their interests. After his remarks, a question and answer session followed. The meeting was adjourned at 3:20 p.m.
Anyone 50 years or above, whether working or retired, is invited to join the local chapter which meets the second Monday of the month excluding July and August. The Dillon Area AARP Chapter #5336 sponsored a four hour AARP Smart Driving Course on March 6, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Council for the Aging.
The instructor for the course was Dr. Paula Martin, AARP Volunteer. Seventeen participants successfully completed the courses which gives a three year insurance discount.
The course is designed to update driving skills, provide knowledge of hazards of the road, learn ways of compensating for normal age-related physical changes, and help reduce traffic violations, accidents, and injuries.
