DHSF Discusses Interest In JVM Campus

There has been increased interest in the J V Martin campus in recent weeks, lifting the spirits of Dillon Historic School Foundation members.  So far, two of those interested have made appointments to tour several of the buildings.  Should something develop with either of these, beginning the renovation of the auditorium could become reality.
The auditorium roof was assessed for repairs by M & A Roofers the day before Hurricane Matthew struck Dillon.  The high winds and rain of the hurricane caused the loss of many more shingles; however, M & A has made all the necessary repairs.  Donations for the roof have been steady, and if that continues, the entire building can be re-roofed.
“Matthew” also did considerable damage to the grounds:  a tree fell over the fence behind the auditorium, another fell in the yard of the gym, and trash and washed-up debris were everywhere.  A clean-up crew of members met on a Saturday to remove the trees, trim the hedges, weed-eat, edge and blow off the sidewalks.  The debris was moved to the roadside for pick-up.  The lobby of the auditorium was also cleaned, improving the appearance for future visitors.   All who worked were treated to lunch.
On November 15, Mr. Steve Harrington, CEO and Consultant of Harrington & Associates Grant Services, came to Dillon at the request of DHSF to inspect the buildings in order to advise the group on a plan of action for developing the property.  He was very impressed with all that we have to work with.   During the tour he pointed out the possibilities of each building and encouraged us that when completed, the Dillon community would be impressed.
Mr. Harrington was instrumental in the planning and opening of Weldon Auditorium in Manning, SC.  It has become the area’s popular center of entertainment and community activities since its completion.  He brings a wealth of experience that can benefit DHSF.
Members have made arrangements to meet Mr. Harrington in Manning, where he will guide us through the Weldon Auditorium, pointing out what can be done here in Dillon.  DHSF is grateful for his time and excited by his enthusiasm of what can be accomplished on the JVM campus to provide areas for many and varied activities.
There will most certainly be a re-birth of cultural arts when the auditorium is completed.  Audiences will be inspired by the performances of gifted pianists, actors in dramatic plays, individual singers or the blended voices of choirs and gospel singers, the music of big bands or a popular entertainer in concert, the energy of dancers, and even aspiring visual artists.
A primary goal of DHSF is to provide opportunities for our young people and older citizens alike who have talents but need help in cultivating.  It’s entirely possible that the future great stars of screen, stage and Broadway will receive introduction to their chosen careers right here in Dillon County.
DHSF welcomes help from the public to keep the buildings and grounds in good condition.  Work days will be announced in The Dillon Herald.
The next meeting of the Dillon Historic School Foundation is Tuesday, December 6 in the Chamber of Commerce conference room and will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m., our winter meeting time.  Join us and become involved in the Future.
