Lady Vikings Battle for 1-0 Win Over Lady Gators

Latta’s Lady Vikings traveled to Lake View on Tuesday night and battled the Lady Wild Gators to a 1-0 win in varsity softball action.

Latta scored the only run in the game in the top of the first. Camryn Sawyer opened the game with a single but Kyra Grant hit into a double play to give the Lady Vikings two outs. Madison Owens followed with a single, and Macy Hyatt hit a double to bring her in before Lake View’s Marissa Tyndall struck out Kaleigh Caulder.

Lake View opened the bottom of the first with a double from Ashley Rogers, who advanced to third on a wild pitch but couldn’t score. Tyndall also reached with a walk and stole second, but both runners were left stranded.

Dori Webster led off the top of th second with a single, but Tyndall struck out the next two batters and Kurstin Hopkins hit a grounder for the third out. In the bottom of the inning, Lake View went three up, three out. In the top of the third, Sawyer singled for Latta and Grant and Caulder drew walks, but three Vikings hit fly balls to send the Gators to bat. Logan Spivey singled with two outs, but Tyndall hit a fly to end the inning.

After Tyndall struck out Genesis Anderson in the top of the fourth, Maddy Long reached on a single. But Hopkins hit a fly and Sawyer lined one to the pitcher for the third out. Madison Greene reached on an error in the bottom of the inning, but Webster struck out Kayla Page and Ally Spivey and Alex Elliott both hit grounders.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Hyatt singled and advanced on a wild pitch, and Caulder drew a walk to put two runners on base. But Tyndall struck out Webster to end the threat. Webster repaid the favor in the bottom of the inning, striking out Jasmine Ford and Rogers, and Shakiara Parker hit a grounder to end the inning.

A fly and a grounder gave the Vikings two outs in the top of the sixth, but Hopkins singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before a grounder from Sawyer sent the Gators to bat. Logan Spivey led off the bottom of the inning with a single and Tyndall drew a walk to put two runners on base. Page hit a fly for the first out, and Ally Spivey made a sacrifice bunt to put Spivey in scoring position, but Webster got a grounder out of Greene to end the threat.

Grant led off the top of the seventh with a single, but Tyndall struck out Owens and Hyatt and Caulder both lined out. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Parker reached on an error, but Rogers flew out to end the game.

Webster pitched a complete game for the win, giving up three hits and two walks with one wild pitch, striking out five. Tyndall took the loss, pitching a complete game for nine hits, one run, one earned run, two wild pitches, and three walks, striking out seven.

At bat for Latta, Hyatt went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI; Sawyer went 2-for-4; Grant went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and also reached on a walk; Owens went 1-for-4 with one run scored; Webster, Long, and Hopkins each went 1-for-3; and Caulder drew two walks. Latta had nine hits and two errors in the win.

For Lake View, Logan Spivey went 2-for-3; Rogers went 1-for-4 with a double; Tyndall drew two walks with one stolen base; and Parker and Greene both reached on errors. Lake View had four hits and one error.

Latta improved to 18-4 overall and 5-0 in Region 8-A, while Lake View slipped to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in the region.

Latta will be at home tonight to host West Florence in a non-conference game, and on Monday, the Vikings will host Carver’s Bay. Both games are set for 5:30 p.m.

Lake View was scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader against Wilson on Wednesday and will be at Carver’s Bay on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.
