Timmonsville Upsets Latta 78-71 in Class A Boys Playoffs

The Timmonsville Whirlwinds upset the Latta Vikings 78-71 in the first round of the Class A boys basketball state playoffs on Tuesday night in Latta.

The Whirlwinds took a 15-13 lead in the first quarter and outpaced the Vikings 20-15 in the second to lead 35-28 at the half. Timmonsville held off the Vikings 14-13 in the third quarter ,and added 29 points in the fourth quarter to mitigate 30 from Latta, allowing the Whirlwinds to advance to round two.

Jalen Moore led Timmonsville with a game-high 24 points, and also grabbed 11 rebounds in the win. Maleek Gee added 15 points with a team-high 13 rebounds; Torey McFadden scored 14 points with five assists; Travion McCray earned 13 points with seven assists and four rebounds; Michael Brown added six points with three assists; and Maxie Gainey earned six points with five rebounds.

Latta was led by Jordan Sims with 15 points. Diez Mungro and Tyreek McAlister each added 14 points in the effort, and Kartilus McFadden earned 11 points. Davonta Porter scored 8; TyQuan Porter, 7; and Justin Hall, 2.

The Latta Vikings finish the season with a 12-7 with their first region championship since 2002.

Timmonsville improves to 12-12 overall and will advance to face Denmark-Olar on Friday night. The Denmark-Olar Vikings defeated Baptist Hill on Tuesday to advance.

In the other Class A lower state games, Hannah-Pamplico defeated Creek Bridge 61-57 to advance, and will host Cross on Friday. Cross defeated Bamberg-Ehrhardt 67-47 in round one.

Carvers Bay fell 86-75 to C.E. Murray on Tuesday, and Allendale-Fairfax earned over 100 points in their win over Charleston Charter. Allendale-Fairfax will host C.E. Murray on Friday.

Hemingway was the only Region 8-A team to advance to the second round, defeating Scott’s Branch 77-57. The Tigers will be on the road Friday to face Burke, who defeated Branchville 75-57.

Most of the upper state games were delayed until Wednesday night due to the weather, but C.A. Johnson earned a 66-47 win over Blackville-Hilda to advance.
