Districts To Be Charged More Money For Alternative School

The Dillon County Board of Education voted at a recent meeting to increase the cost per student to the districts to cover the costs of the Alternative School program to $14.11 per day. The motion was made by Member Carl Altman and seconded by Member John Best. The motion was approved. ATEC Director Jerry Strickland reported that the Alternative School had a $100,000 short fall in funding last year. He received $2,290 from Latta and $62,000 from Dillon District Four last year as payment for Alternative School students last year. Dr. Joh Kirby said that he only sends a few students to the Alternative School for 10 or 15 days and then the student returns back to regular school. Districts used to receive $50,000 in funding for the Alternative School, but do not get this now. Superintendent Ray Rogers said that ATEC is doing an excellent job with the Alternative School. Dr. Kirby said they are providing a community service.
