The light of our life, Carolyn Sue Varner McPhatter, was called to walk the golden streets of Heaven on January 6, 2014, from the Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. She was born in Davidson County, October 2, 1945 the youngest blessing of Rena Belle Hill Varner and John Henry Varner. Her siblings include brothers, Winfred Varner and George Varner and his wife Coleen of Thomasville and sisters, Willie Davis of Thomasville and Peggy Varner of Lexington. She wed her best friend and love of her life of 53 years, Willie Legrand McPhatter on June 4, 1960. From their love came three loving children, Angela McPhatter Olds and her husband Brian, Edwina McPhatter Hardee and her husband Jerry, and Willie Legrand (Lee) McPhatter, Jr. and his wife Christa, all of Thomasville. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Matthew Holland and his companion, Angela Marsh, Taylor McPhatter, Alli McPhatter, and Willie Legrand (Wil) McPhatter, III; a great-grand daughter, Faith Holland and a grand-dog, Shyanne. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sisters, Alice Hancock, Ella Rae Lopp, Mattie Hunt, and Mabel Hughes, and by brothers, Charles Varner, Charlie Varner, and James Varner. Her love and devotion to her family was immeasurable. Family meant everything to her right down to the in-laws that she treated just as her own. She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker. After her retirement as a seamstress, another of her passions emerged in the way of traveling. Cruising was something that she was fond of and her favorite destinations included but were not limited to Aruba, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and all parts of the Caribbean. These are just a few of the journeys she and her family ventured on. She has embarked on her greatest journey yet. She will be terribly missed by all who knew and loved her. She will forever be in our hearts, souls, and thoughts. There will be an incredible void that can never be filled by her absence. The family would like to extend their heart-felt gratitude to all of the special friends for all of the outpouring of love and support too numerous to name. The cards and phone calls meant everything to Mom, as well as the rest of the family. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville by the Rev. Henry King and the Rev. Johnny Albertson. Burial wasin Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 until 8p.m. and other times at the residence. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Davidson County for all their love and support and also thanks to home health nurse, Jennifer Palmer. They have made this process so much easier for all involved and are truly Angels on Earth.
