Dillon, Latta Girls Advance to State Championships

Latta’s Ponytails and both the Dillon and Latta Darlings advanced to the state championship games which were scheduled to be played on Wednesday.

The 2013 Dixie Ponytails tournament is being played in North Charleston, SC, with seven teams competing.

The Latta Ponytails drew a bye in the first round of the 2013 state tournament with Union, Hanahan and Walhalla advancing in the winner’s bracket. Latta defeated Walhalla on Sunday, July 14, and Hanahan defeated Union, and on Monday night, Hanahan defeated Latta to send the Latta girls to the elimination bracket.

In the elimination bracket, Cheraw defeated Barnwell on Sunday and North Charleston on Monday to advance, while Walhalla defeated Union on Sunday. On Tuesday, Hanahan eliminated Cheraw to remain undefeated while Latta eliminated Walhalla to advance to the state championship game.

On Wednesday, Latta and Hanahan played for the state title at 10:00 a.m. with Hanahan claiming the championship with a 7-1 win over Latta.

Hanahan will advance to the Dixie Ponytails World Series in Bluffton, South Carolina.

Latta and Dillon both had teams competing in the eight-team 2013 Dixie Darlings state championship tournament in Iva, SC.

Latta defeated Bamberg 15-3 in the first round and Dillon defeated Walterboro 20-9 to advance, setting up a meeting between the local rivals on Sunday. Dillon was head 5-4 when the game was delayed by rain, and on Monday the Dillon Darlings claimed a 6-4 win when the game continued.

Meanwhile, Boiling Springs defeated Lancaster American on Saturday and host team Iva defeated Westminister to advance. Boiling Springs defeated Iva on Monday, while Bamberg eliminated Walterboro and Westminister eliminated Lancaster.

On Monday evening, Latta eliminated Westminister and Iva knocked off Bamberg while Dillon defeated Boiling Springs 21-10 to remain undefeated in the tournament.

Tuesday saw Dillon eliminate Iva 18-7 to advance to the state championship. Latta also eliminated Boiling Springs to stay alive in the tournament.

Dillon and Latta were set to play for the Dixie Darlings state title on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. Latta will have to beat Dillon twice to claim the title.

The winner of the state championship will advance to the World Series in Alexandria, Louisiana.

UPDATE: The Dillon and Latta 8U teams were tied 11-11 on Wednesday night when the game was postponed by the weather. The game was scheduled to resume on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. with a second game following if necessary.
