Cross, Christ Church Claim Championships

Cross and Christ Church claimed the Class A State Championships in their respective divisions on Friday, November 23 at Benedict College in Columbia.

After defeating Lake View 41-10 for the lower state title, Cross moved on to face McCormick for the Division II state title. The Trojans jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, and after a scoreless second, both teams added 20 points in the third and six points in the fourth for a final score of 38-26. It’s the first football state championship for Cross.

In Division I, Johnsonville defeated Hemingway 20-7 to move to the lower state championship game, where the Flashes defeated Estill 35-24. In the upper state, Christ Church defeated Ware Shoals 55-28 for the championship, and on Friday, the Cavaliers defeated Johnsonville 27-18 for the Division I state title.

In Class AA, Dillon moved on to the state championship game by defeating Timberland 48-13. The Wildcats will face Fairfield Central this Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Benedict College for the Class AA Division I title. Fairfield Central defeated Newberry 28-21 for the upper state title.

In Division II, Bishop England defeated Silver Bluff 42-7 for the lower state title and Abbeville defeated Chesnee 40-13 for the upper state championship. The two teams will meet at 8:30 p.m. this Friday for the state title.

In Class AAA, Hartsville defeated Strom Thurmond 14-10 for the lower state title while Union County defeated Daniel 20-14 in the upper state. Hartsville will take on Union at 6:30 p.m. in Williams Bryce Stadium in Columbia on Saturday, December 1.

In AAAA, Dutch Fork will take on Gaffney for the state title at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday in Division I, while Greenwood will take on Northwestern at noon in Division II.
