Dr. Haselden Wins State Award

Dr. Polly Haselden, an Assistant Professor in the School of Education, has been awarded the Service Learning Award from the Commission of Higher Education for the state of South Carolina.
Dr. Richard Chapman, Provost of Francis Marion University, nominated Haselden to represent the university in this statewide competition among all public, four year universities.
Haselden was notified by the Commission of Higher Education that her project: Tutoring and Mentoring in Literacy Instruction, won the award.
The Service Learning Award competition is prestigious, and this is only the second time that Francis Marion has won the award. Dr. Haselden will receive the award at the Commission on Higher Education meeting on April 5th. There are actually three awards given, one for four year public universities, one for two-year colleges, and one for independent universities. Haselden won the award for the four year public universities.
Haselden has been an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at Francis Marion University since 2007. Previously, she spent nine years as a public school teacher in the states of South Carolina and North Carolina and three years in higher education at James Madison University and The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Dr. Haselden graduated from Converse College with a B.A. and from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte with both her M.Ed. and Ph.D. Her professional interests are literacy instruction, learning disabilities, and action research. She has published and presented nationally in all areas. Dr. Haselden is married to Scott Haselden, and they have two girls, Lola and Sophie Belle.
