Category: Bill Lee’s Columns

The musings and memories of the late W.C. “Bill” Lee, a retired teacher, a professional photographer, community volunteer, columnist for The Dillon Herald, church officer and pianist, and one who served in other leadership roles. His wit and wisdom are truly missed, but can be re-lived in this series of columns.

Love Is…

Seafood is not high on my dining list except for fish.  Growing up, we only had this one catch, bounty from the local Pee Dee River.  But today, we were in a commercial setting and the variety of servings was endless so I chose… fish.

Gone

I have trouble giving this column a title since its writing brings sadness.  My friend has ‘gone’ that is he has died –  a word I wish I could avoid.

Remembering

Recently I read a newspaper (WSJ) article about a practice in some European countries as of yet not exported to our shores.

Learning To Drive

She is older than some but more active than most.  Her centennial is a date she is sure to reach… soon.  She exercises regularly by walking when the weather permits and has influenced other to take up the challenge.  But perhaps her most outstanding characteristic is her memory.  Seemingly she can recall nearly any important past moment in extreme detail such as learning to drive.

Cool Aid

Turn off the A/C (air conditioning) and effectively most churches would have many more of their pews empty.  Parishioners today are accustomed (and demand) all the comforts and conveniences available that members enjoy at their homes the other six+ days of the week.

Art Is…

We lived in the country, a farm family whose living standards were somewhat marginal by today’s standards but by comparison a little better than that of some of our neighbors.

Winding Down

Most people have at one time owned a spring wound toy.  Wind it up and the stored energy in the spring provides the power of movement.  How long depends on many factors such as among others, spring strength and coil/tension efficacy.  Such factors determine the duration of the spring operated movement.  It’s a little like life ever slowly and inevitably unwinding.  This thought came to mind as I write this column.

Destiny

I live on Elkins Road and have for most of my long life.  The grammar school I attended for seven years was on (now) Elkins Road.

Ramblings Of The Past

Every day except Sunday, I visit a nursing home.  Of course the residents are mostly way past retirement and many with medical conditions but most with remarkably good recall about the past especially during their youth.

Breaking News

A ‘reliable’ source has announced that it has learned that the end of the world will take place in early April, 2014.  Details were unavailable which led to further skepticism since the announced date was April 1st.  Stay  tuned for late breaking news coming up after an important announcement.
