The visiting Lake View Wild Gators handed the Latta Vikings a 59-39 loss in varsity basketball action played in Latta on Friday, January 27, before a large crowd.
Excitement and anticipation filled the gym as the tip-off started the action in the fast-paced game.
Latta’s LaBron Cobb sank the first basket for 2 points to give Latta an early lead that was answered by 5 points by Lake View. As each basket was scored or a great defensive play, the crowd cheered as in previous games. After the first quarter of play, Lake View was up 13-8. By halftime Lake View was up 27-14. After 3 quarter of play, Lake View led by 19 points.
Lake View’s Cam Umphries led all scorers with 16 points. He had three 3-point baskets, two 2-point baskets, and 3 free throws. Garrett Vaught added two 3-point baskets and 2 free throws for 8 points onto the scoreboard. Sevon Nichols also had four 2-point baskets for 8 points while Jayden Benjamin scored 7 points with three 2-point baskets and a free throw as Ahmarion Nichols also accounted for 7 points with two 2-point baskets and a 3-point basket. Shaheed Dawkins added two 2-point baskets and 2 points from the charity line for 6 points. Daniel Ray connected for two 2-point baskets for 4 points. Jayden Ford sank a 2-point basket, and JaQuentin Johnson connected for a free throw.
Latta’s Leterrian Israel led the Vikings with 9 points. He sank three 2-point baskets and 3 free throws. LaBron Cobb added three 2-point baskets for 6 points. Chris McRae had two 2-point baskets and a free throw for 5 points while Lacoree Timmons picked up 5 points from the charity line. KJ Evans and PJ Legette each hit a 3. Dorian Griffin and Amir Rogers each had a 2-point basket while Eli Jones and Nathan Holloman each sank a 2-point basket.
Latta committed 10 fouls in the first half and 7 fouls in the second half while Lake View committed 10 fouls in the first half and 10 fouls in the second half.
Lake View will host Green Sea Floyds today (Tuesday, January 31) and Latta will host Hannah-Pamplico.
