PHOTO GALLERY: Latta Girls Basketball v. Socastee

The visiting Socastee Lady Braves defeated the Latta Lady Vikings 41-31 in varsity basketball action played in Latta on December 1.
The 5A Socastee team defeated the 1A Latta team earlier in the week on Monday in a game controlled by the Lady Braves. However, Latta Head Coach Sandra Gomillion and her assistant coaches, Bobby Richardson and Ruby Lee Wright, had the Latta players ready for the rematch.
Socastee led 9-8 after the first period of play. Latta took the lead early in the second period of play but a 3-point basket by Laney Shreve gave the Lady Braves a 12-11 lead. At halftime, the Lady Braves held a slim 2-point lead, 18-16, over the Lady Vikings.
Each team committed 9 fouls in the first half.
With 6:14 remaining in the third period of play, the game was knotted at 18. With 4:12 remaining in the third quarter of play, Socastee was up 22-21.
The game was a close one until the Lady Braves got a 7-point cushion, 32-25 after 3 quarters of play. Each team committed 3 fouls in the third period.
In the fourth period of play, the Latta Lady Vikings continued to fight. Latta’s Kaliya Herman connected for a 3-point basket to cut the lead to 4 points. Socastee’s Laney Shreve hit a 3 to give the Lady Braves another 7-point lead. With about 2 minutes remaining in the game, the Lady Braves went up 38-28. Once again, Latta’s Shawniza Bethea connected for 3 to cut the lead to 7 points. Mackenzie Massey connected from 3-point range in the corner with 45 seconds to place the final 3 points of the game onto the scoreboard to give Socastee the win.
Socastee committed 3 fouls in the fourth period, and Latta committed no fouls in the final period.
Socastee’s Sailor Rearden had a 2-point basket, three 3-point baskets, and 2 free throws for 13 points. Mackenzie Massey had three 2-point baskets, a 3-point basket, and 4 free throws. Anna R. Pratt had four 2-point baskets for 8 points.
Keke Carter had a 2-point basket and a 3-point basket for 5 points. Laney Shreve had two 2-point baskets for 4 points.
Latta’s Kaliya Herman had two 2-point baskets, three 3-point baskets and 2 free throws to lead all scorers. Shawniza Bethea had two 2-point baskets, two 3-point baskets, and 2 free throws for 12 points. Layla Hyatt and Jocelynn Myers each had a 2-point basket.
On Tuesday, December 6, Latta will host Lee Central for a 6:00 p.m. exhibition game.
