The Marion Swamp Foxes defeated the Lake View Wild Gators 58-14 in varsity football action played in Lake View at the Jewell McLaurin Field on Thursday, August 18.
With only 22 ticks off the clock, Lake View found themselves down 6-0 as Marion’s #2 carried the football in for the score. He also carried the 2-point conversion into the end zone to give Marion an 8-0 lead.
Lake View responded with Tyrell Foxworth taking the kick-off and making a good return. Kason Herlong completed a pass for 5 yards to Trey Page followed by Marvin Gordon grinding out a 3-yard gain. Kerlong tossed another pass to Trey Page for Lake View’s first down. Marvin Gordon was dropped for a 1-yard loss. Herlong completed a pass to Shaeed Dawkins. Marvin Gordon was stopped for a 2-yard loss on third and 4. Faced with fourth down and 6 yards to go, Herlong completed a pass to Shaeed Dawkins for a first down to keep the drive going. Logan Jones was dropped for an 8-yard loss. Marvin Gordon picked up 10 yards on the next play and 2 yards on the following play. Logan Jones carried for 3 yards followed by Marvin Gordon picking up a yard. Lake View faced fourth down from the 1-yard line. Logan Jones carried the football in for 6 points with 3:11 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT failed. Marion was up 8-6. Marion’s #22 took the kick-off and returned it to Lake View’s 29-yard line. The Swamp Foxes wasted little time in returning to the Lake View end zone with Marion’s #6 scoring on the fourth offensive play with 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter to give Marion a 14-6 lead. The 2-point conversion failed.
The Wild Gators returned the kick-off to their own 39-yard line. On the first offensive play of the series, Marion’s #2 picked off a pass. With 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Marion’s quarterback, #10, carried the football into the end zone for 6 points. The 2-point conversion attempt failed. Marion was up 20-6.
Lake View returned the kick-off to their own 40-yard line. After one rushing play, Marion’s #2 once again intercepts a pass. On the next play, a pass intended for a Marion player was tipped and Marion’s #15 grabbed it and scored 6 points with 11:42 remaining in the second period of play to give Marion a 26-6 lead. Marion’s quarterback carried the football in for the 2-point conversion to give Marion a 28-6 lead.
Lake View returned the kick-off to Marion’s 41-yard line for great field position. After picking up a first down, Marion stopped the Wild Gators and took over with 6:11 remaining in the second quarter. With 2:32 remaining in the second period of play, Marion’s quarterback threw a completion to #9 for the score. Marion’s #5 carried the football into the end zone for the 2-point conversion to give Marion a 36-6 lead.
Lake View began the next offensive series with a pass to Trey Page who made a good catch for a first down. Shaeed Dawkins made a great catch for another first down plus a penalty against Marion. Courtland Hardee picked up a first down to continue the drive. Courtland Hardee completed a pass to Trey Page for a touchdown with 6 seconds remaining in the first half. A jump pass from Logan Jones to Luke King was good for 2 points to cut Marion’s lead to 22 points.
In the second half, Lake View could not muster a score while Marion added 22 points to the scoreboard.
Lake View will travel to Mullins on Friday, August 26, for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Auctioneers.
