Wildcats Gain District Title With Win Over Hawkettes

The Dillon Lady Wildcats edged the visiting Hanahan Hawkettes 2-1 to claim the District Title in varsity softball in Dillon on Wednesday, May 11, before a good crowd of supporters.
A scary moment occurred as Dillon’s pitcher Chesney Caddell was hit in the chest by a lead-off hit by Anderson Thrower.
Caddell continued after regaining her “breath” and pitched a good 5.2 innings.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when Paige Sherman arrived safely at first on an error on a grounder to third. On an attempted pick off at first, the runner at first arrived safely at second. Erika Willaimson hit one up the middle and ended up on third with Mariah Campbell (pinch runner for Sherman) crossing home for the first score of the game. After 2 innings, Dillon lead 1-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Makenna Meekins hit one to center for a double. Jenascia Lester hit one up the middle, and Meekins scored to give Dillon a 2-0 lead after 5 innings.
After retiring 2 batters in a row, Caddell walked the next batter. Alex Stuckey then hit one up the middle for a single. With the tying runs on first and second, Sherman came in relief. Michaela Conlon hit one to center for a single and a rbi to cut Dillon’s lead to 1 run, 2-1. Sherman retired the next batter on strikes to end the scoring threat.
After Dillon’s lead-off hitter hit a fly to short center for out 1, Sherman lined one to left for a single. Chesney Caddell hit one to left that bounced once to the fence for a double and the runner was thrown out attempting to make it to third. A grounder to short ended the scoring threat for Dillon.
In the top of the seventh inning, a strike-out, a fly out to right, a single to left, and a grounder to short by Hanahan closed out the game with Dillon as District champs.
Dillon’s Chesney Caddell pitched 5.2 innings and allowed 4 hits, 1 earned run, walked 2, and struck out 3. Paige Sherman pitched 1.1 innings in relief. She allowed 2 hits, walked no one, and struck out 2.
Hanahan’s Kaylee LeCompte took the loss. She pitched 6 innings and allowed 5 hits, 2 runs of which 1 was earned. walked 1, and struck out 2.
Dillon’s Jenascia Lester had a single and a rbi in her 3 at-bats as did Erika Williamson. Makeena Meekins had a double and scored a run in her 2 at-bats. Logan Grice had a triple in her 3 at-bats. Chesney Caddell had a double in her 3 at-bats. Paige Sherman had 2 singles, scored a run, and had a stolen base in her 3 at-bats. Shakinah Murphy garnered a walk.
Hanahan’s Michaela Conlon had a double, a single, and a rbi in her 3 at-bats. Brooke Jones had a hit and a walk in her 2 at-bats. Alex Stuckey had a single in her 3 at-bats. Angela Eimers had a single and a stolen base in her 4 at-bats. Anderson Thrower had a single in her 4 at-bats. Bailey Ducker had a walk and scored a run in her 2 at-bats.
Each team had 2 errors in the game.
