The Dillon High School Class of 1983 hosted its Inaugural Rosana D. King Memorial Scholarship Gala on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Brandi’s Banquet Hall in Dillon, South Carolina. Se’Lisa Inman Scott, Class of 1983 member, served as Mistress of Ceremony.
The purpose of this evening of elegance was to pay homage to Rosana D. King – educator, activist, businesswoman, trailblazer, and Dillonite – who believed in the true service to all mankind. As quoted by one of the guests, Jackie Yates-Leach, “Ms. King made sure, within her might, that students were engaged in their learning, participated in community service, and became life-long learners after high school.” Arlen Crawford, Class of 1983 member, went further by stating that the purpose encompasses the effort of “fostering” or enabling growth. By giving back, the DHS Class of 1983 is fostering and assisting the development of young minds, which Ms. King aspired to do.
One of Dillon’s favorite sons, Mr. Lynwood McDaniel, currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland, was the keynote speaker. He was introduced by Catherine James Scott, Class of 1983 member. Mr. McDaniel was hailed enthusiastically by all attendees of the gala. His passionate speech left everyone inspired, uplifted, and edified.
Carol Samuel and Levon Stephens, Class of 1983 members, presented the scholarship recipients and keynote speaker with their awards and plaques. Three students from Dillon County schools (Lake View High, Latta High, and Dillon High) were awarded a $1000 scholarship and plaque, respectively.
Miss Jymia Gilchrist, daughter of Netta Gilchrist, was a 2021 honor graduate of Lake View High School. Currently, Jymia is serving as a youth ambassador for A Safe Place in Grace – a non-profit organization. Also, Jymia is a freshman at the University of South Carolina Upstate where she is pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education.
Miss Gabrielle (Gabby) Mace, daughter of Sir Darrell and Anita Mace, was a 2021 honor graduate of Latta High School. Currently, Gabby is a freshman at the University of South Carolina majoring in Studio Arts with a concentration in Photography and Graphic Design. Also, Gabby serves as a sports photographer for The Daily Gamecock, USC’s bi-weekly magazine and will serve as a summer orientation leader for USC, as she welcomes the 2022 freshman class to campus.
Miss Shakierah Roberts, daughter of James and Sherry Roberts, was an early graduate of Dillon High School Class of 2021. While at Dillon High School, Shakierah was an honor student, cheer captain, member of JROTC, and Regional Band for South Carolina. Currently, Shakierah is a freshman at South Carolina State University majoring in Elementary Education.
Ms. Rosana D. King’s granddaughter, Pamela King McRae gave sentiments from the King family. On behalf of her aunt, Alisha King, and her sisters: Kacey, Aubyn, and Shraja, Pamela thanked every contributor and the Dillon High School Class of 1983 for the honor bestowed on her grandmother. She encouraged all attendees to continue supporting the efforts of awarding yearly scholarships in memory of her dear grandmother.
Many contributors made this event possible. Donations from patrons, ticket sales, and ads from local businesses all played a vital role in helping to fund the scholarship awards. Vanessa Covington, Class of 1983 member, acknowledged special guests and vendors.
Angela Graves Stephens, Class of 1983 member, concluded the evening with final remarks. She was almost moved to tears, as all witnessed the efforts being made to establish the Rosana D. King Memorial Scholarship Gala as an annual event to honor Ms. Rosana D. King…teacher, counselor, mentor, and friend.
