The Florence Christian Eagles defeated the Dillon Christian School Warriors 28-14 in junior varsity action played in Dillon on Thursday, August 26.
The Warriors took the opening kickoff but were unable to move the football offensively and were forced to punt.
The Eagles took over on their own 20-yard line. The Eagles were faced with a fourth down and thanks to an encroachment call against the Warriors were able to pick up a first down. The Eagles managed a first down on a 2-yard run by Josh Davis and a keeper by the quarterback, Gabe McLaughlin. On the next play, McLaughlin picked up 6 yards as he was chased out of bounds. A pass completion was good to Brooks Poston for 2 yards. On third down the Warriors stopped the Eagles for no gain. Faced with fourth down and 2 yards to go, the Eagles’ Gabe McLaughlin picked up a huge first down on a long run.
The first quarter ended with no score in the game.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the early moments of the second quarter on a keeper by the quarterback, Gabe McLaughlin. The 2-point conversion failed.
The Dillon Christian School Warriors responded with a score of their own on a kickoff return by #5 who made a long run. The 2-point conversion failed but the score was knotted at 6 with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter.
The Warriors attempted an onside kick that was covered by the Eagles that gave them great field position on the 50-yard line. After a false start by the Eagles and a loss of a yard, the Eagles were faced with a third down and long. However, a 15-yard penalty against the Warriors gave the Eagles new life with a first down. Gabe McLaughlin picked 9 yards on a keeper. McLaughlin fired an incomplete pass on the next play as he was in the clutches of a Warrior defender. A completed pass picked up a first down. With 3:15 remaining in the first half, McLaughlin broke tackles to score to give Florence a 12-6 lead. A 2-point pass attempt failed.
The Eagles recovered the kickoff and started on Dillon’s 40-yard line. However, on the first offensive play, Dillon recovered the fumble and took over.
Dillon’s #12 kept for a first down. On the next play, Dillon’s #12 fired a completed pass to #1 who scored to knot the game at 12. Dillon’s #5 carried the football in for 2 points to give Dillon a 14-12 lead with 2:50 remaining in the first half.
The Florence Eagles started on their own 40-yard line with good field position. The clock would run out without a score.
Dillon led at halftime 14-12.
Florence’s Gabe McLaughlin carried the pigskin in for 6 points with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter to go up 18-14. The Eagles connected for a 2-point pass to increase the lead by 6 points, 20-14.
The Warriors began on the 50-yard line due to a short kick. Brooks Poston picked off a Dillon pass and returned it to Dillon’s 39-yard line.
Florence took control and began to move the ball.
At the end of 3 quarters, the Eagles held a 6-point lead, 20-14.
Florence’s Brooks Poston scored from the 3-yard line with 7:19 remaining in the game. The 2-point conversion was good by Brooks Poston to give Florence a 28-14 lead.
Dillon’s #7 returned the kickoff to Florence’s 44-yard line. Florence quickly regained control of the football as Brooks Poston intercepted a pass on Florence’s own 28-yard line.
Florence once-again managed to score on a run by Gabe McLaughlin. However, the play was nullified with 3:41 remaining in the game. Time expired without another score in the game.
