Mayor Pro-Tem, City Manager Give Reports

By Betsy Finklea
Mayor Pro-Tem Phil Wallace and City Manager Glen Wagner gave brief reports at the May meeting of the Dillon City Council.
Wallace said he spoke at the Lions Club meeting and had a good response. He said the city is running well thanks to a great council, and they are in a pretty good place especially financially.
Wallace was pleasantly surprised at the attendance of the downtown festival despite the weather.
Wallace said COVID numbers looked good, and many people who have come to his office have had the vaccine shot.
Wallace also spoke at the hospital for Nurses Appreciation Week.
He said he is trying to do his best representing the city.
Wagner gave his report next. He said the City of Dillon Wellness Center has hosted several vaccine clinics that were held by DHEC and McLeod. He said DHEC had a few more scheduled.
Wagner said the weather was not the best at the festival. He said some of the vendors did not show up. He said turkey legs and funnel cakes are the big sellers.
He said there was a good turnout for the Dillon Community Alliance’s First Friday event.
Wagner said last month he spoke about the American Rescue Plan funds. The funds are based on population, but cannot total more than 75 percent of what your budget was prior to the pandemic. He said the city is getting approximately $2.36 million, and he expects to get some of it this month. The money must be spent before the end of December 2024.
Wagner said he and Janet Bethea, Finance Director, had been working on the budget and announced the schedule for the budget workshops.
During the finance report, it was asked what the status was on Zaxby’s. City Code Enforcement Officer Benny Genwright said they were waiting for them to apply for building permits.
