4-H Shooting Sports Competitive Season Begins With A Bang

The Dillon County 4-H Shooting Sports competitive season began with a bang both figuratively and literarly. As a team they broke 19 of their first 20 targets. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the club did not participate in any of the previous competitions of the 2020/2021 season. December 11 to 19, 2020 the South Carolina Department Of Natural Resources is hosting a virtual skeet match and some members of the Dillon County team traveled to the Wateree Range in Eastover, SC to participate. The SCDNR provided the targets and the shooting ranges.
The shooters were grouped into different divisions according to school grade. The Senior Division is composed of 12th and 11th graders. The Junior Division is made up of 10th and 9th graders. The Middle Division is made up of 8th, 7th and 6th graders. The team had shooters in each division.
Joseph Raia, a junior division shooter, was the high shooter for the Dillon County team, breaking 31 of the 50 targets. David Ryan Camp, a senior division shooter, had the highest single round breaking 20 out of 25 targets. A squad of middle division shooters, Austin Beasley, Jake Cline, and Jack Raia, averaged breaking right at 50% of their targets. Austin scored 25, Jake broke 23, and Jack got 20.
While no prizes or awards were presented, the top shooters from each division from teams all across the state will be invited to shoot in the State Skeet Championship to be held in February 2021. Teams from all over the state made up from schools and clubs are in the running to compete for the Governors Cup which is awarded to the team that has the highest score in the Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays competitions combined.
